Please join us for this online seminar about Vlad the Impaler, a national hero of Romania.
Vlad Tepeş, known as Vlad Drăculea, was Voivode of Wallachia three times in the 15th Century. The landscape that became Romania was at the time a clashing point where the interests and armies of the Ottoman Empire of Mehmet II and the Christian kingdoms met.
We will learn how Vlad came to power, and lost it. We will examine his legendary cruelty. We will see how economic and religious interests allied against him and changed Romanian history.
Further, we will look at Bram Stoker's fictional character Count Dracula and the archetype of the vampire. Centuries ago, the Transylvanian people wove blood-thirsty tales which have evolved into a modern myth. This myth brings tourists to Romania today, tangling fiction with history.
Our conversation will be led by Dr. Guillaume Durand. Dr. Durand is an expert in ancient and medieval history, art, architecture, and the archaeology of Romania. He is an assistant dean and professor in archaeology and art history at the Institute for American Universities and the American College of the Mediterranean in Aix-en-Provence, France.
